Late Monday night, BPRD Headquarters - New Jersey
Liz was sitting on her bed in the room that had been specifically designed for her at the BPRD Headquarters. She had been there for three weeks and it still felt like an alien environment to her. Tomorrow she would be starting at a new high school and it was for that reason that she felt too nervous to sleep.
After all the schools that she had attended over the years she thought that it would get easier with each new school that she started at but each time she had been proven wrong. Now she was starting at a boarding school, Professor Broom had said that it was for people like her but that didn't comfort her in the slightest. She wondered how long it would take for the people there to hate her, if it was anything to go by her other schools that wouldn't take very long.
She self consciously placed a finger on the small scar on her forehead, a constant reminder of what she had done. If she hadn't been hit with those rocks, she wouldn't have lost control of her powers and if she hadn't lost control of her powers her mother would still be alive and there would be no reason for her to be living in a place like the BPRD. She knew that she couldn't change the past despite how much she wanted to be able to, if she could correct that one incident then everyone would be better off. There were too many 'ifs' Liz thought, thinking about something wasn't going to change it. The reality was that it had happened and tomorrow she was going to start at a boarding school. A boarding school in Virginia.
It was a wonder that she had been accepted, given her record. No other school would have accepted someone like her, why did this one? She knew that it wasn't a result of Professor Broom pulling strings to ensure her acceptance, if he had that much power he would have tried it with one of the schools more closer to the BPRD. She had almost called the BPRD home but she stopped herself because she wasn't ready to accept what had happened. If she called this place home, then it would be an insult to the people that she had killed. Why should she have survived when it was her fault that her powers had gone out of control? That was the one thing she didn't understand, why her? By all rights she should be in jail for life, guilty of murdering 32 people.
Liz's gaze landed on the black duffle bag that she had packed with the few belongings that she had, and the small tan suitcase. Professor Broom had seen to that she got what she needed for school. The cat carrier that was next to her luggage was open as she hadn't yet put the black kitten Hellboy had given her as a going away to school present. She gave a small smile as Blackie climbed onto her lap and purred, she scratched behind Blackie's ears slightly comforted by the gesture.
She sighed as she glanced at the alarm clock on her nightstand. She knew that she should get a good night sleep but the truth was she couldn't remember the last time that she had, had a proper sleep. Her sleep was always disturbed by nightmares that she couldn't escape from. She hoped that they would stop by tomorrow night, even though she seriously doubted it. She didn't know what her roommate would think about having to share a room with someone who kept waking up screaming in the night.
Tomorrow she would be going to a new school and a new chapter of her life would be begin, again.
