He realized maybe a bit too late that picking the cat up first made it much more difficult for him to actually get up, but once he had the cat, he didn't want to let her go, so he was just going to have to deal with a particularly wobbly effort in getting to his feet without the use of his hands. Hopefully, though, he hadn't held her too hard in the process, and once he was up, he could shift her to a more comfortable position as he headed toward the kitchen.
And then stopped dead in his tracks again and maybe held Kitty a little closer to him protectively when he realized he didn't recognize the person in the kitchen at all, and he wondered if it wasn't too late to retreat, maybe she hadn't noticed him yet, but, ohhhhhhh, nooooooo, that food smelled so gooooooood....
It was a very long moment of crisis and conundrum he was facing just then.
